Nominees Sought for Wastewater Security Experts Panel
The General Accounting Office (GAO), an independent and nonpartisan agency of Congress, is conducting a study addressing wastewater security at the request of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. GAO intends to gather information for the study using a Web-based panel of experts to provide information regarding:

  1. The ways in which the Nation's wastewater treatment facilities may be vulnerable to terrorism;
  2. How federal funds can best be allocated among potential recipients to reduce vulnerabilities; and,
  3. What specific activities merit federal support?

A similar approach was used for their drinking water security study last year, Drinking Water: Experts Views on How Future Federal Funding Can Best be Spent to Improve Security, which received very positive feedback from participants (see www.gao.gov/cgi-bin/getrpt?GAO-04-29).

AMSA has been asked to assist GAO in compiling a list of experts with a broad range of perspectives who might be good candidates for this panel. At this time we are contacting AMSA’s membership to ask for recommendations of individuals (public and private sector, both within your organization or outside) that may be well suited to contribute to this expert panel through a Web-based survey (no travel required). The survey instrument will be located online only. Selected panelists will not have to do any research and may rely on their professional experience to guide their responses. The questions are geared toward gleaning lessons learned, best practices and ideas for ways in which to prioritize the allocation of federal funds for wastewater security.

Should you wish to nominate yourself – or another individual – to serve on the GAO’s expert panel on wastewater security, please provide the following information – as soon as possible, but no later than March 3rd – to AMSA’s Deputy Executive Director, Paula Dannenfeldt, via e-mail at pdannenfeldt@amsa-cleanwater.org:

  1. Nominee contact information (name, organization affiliation, title, phone number, address and e-mail);
  2. A short bio addressing the depth and type of experience in wastewater management, security, risk assessment, emergency preparedness, disaster recovery and/or bioterrorism possessed by the nominee; and,
  3. Nominee professional affiliations.

Please note that GAO is in the process of compiling a list of possible panel members and may not be able to invite all qualified individuals to participate.

Thank you in advance for your time, interest, and prompt response to this request for nominations.
