AMSA's upcoming Summer Conference -- The Biosolids Challenge...Ensuring Success -- will be held at the historic Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 17 -20. The agenda will focus on key biosolids management issues that affect publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) across the nation including -- dioxin, radioactivity, pathogens, worker health and safety, environmental management systems, public acceptance and improved science. These crucial issues, currently in the national spotlight, will have implications on biosolids disposal and reuse practices nationwide.

Conference Agenda to Focus on Biosolids Management

Biosolids management programs have come under increased evaluation from Congress, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Academy of Science. Several of these initiatives undertaken by these entities will culminate in 2001, and AMSA members will be ready.

Currently, EPA is working to complete agency-wide dioxin reassessment, which may have significant impact on EPA's plans to finalize proposed Part 503 regulatory revisions to limit dioxins in land applied biosolids. To assess the economic impact of this rule, AMSA is also conducting a dioxin in biosolids survey to ensure that the concerns of the clean water community are being met. Preliminary results of this survey will be available at AMSA's Summer Conference.

Practitioners Share EMS Experience

The National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) has undertaken a demonstration program to evaluate the use of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a means to improve biosolids management practices. Conference attendees will hear about these cutting-edge biosolids management programs from the practitioner's perspective.

Sandman to Provide Risk Workshop

Ongoing public acceptance concerns make biosolids management an important communications issue. To help with these concerns, Dr. Peter M. Sandman, a renowned risk communications expert, will conduct a biosolids-focused Risk Communication Workshop during AMSA's Summer Conference. This important session, entitled, Biosolids: Talking to Communities -- And Doing it Better, will provide useful tools to members on how to:

  • Be proactive in outreach efforts
  • Diagnose the concerns of the public and respond effectively
  • Communicate effectively when speaking with stakeholders about important biosolids issues

Dr. Sandman's advice should be especially useful for public agencies working to increase public acceptance of biosolids reuse and disposal.

AMSA Committees to Examine Important Clean Water Issues

AMSA's special committees will meet during the 2001 Summer Conference. These meetings are designed to keep attendees abreast of current and emerging regulatory and legislative issues from sanitary sewer overflows to infrastructure funding. These strategic discussions will be critical; committee members and interested individuals are encouraged to attend.
