Asset Based Vulnerability Checklist for Wastewater Utilities (PDF ~4,918 KB)

AMSA is pleased to announce the release of its much-anticipated publication Protecting Wastewater Infrastructure Assets . . . Asset Based Vulnerability Checklist for Wastewater Utilities (the Checklist). The Checklist is the first in a number of key security/crisis management tools to assist wastewater utilities in laying the ever-important groundwork to assess and prioritize their utilities' vulnerabilities.

In the wake of September 11th, there has been much discussion focusing on ensuring the security of our water and wastewater systems. Since these tragic events, the dangers of storing hazardous chemicals, such as chlorine, at wastewater treatment plants, and the potential misuse of the underground collection system tunnels as a means of access to critical commercial/industrial areas and their buildings, have become well-known.

The Checklist will help utilities effectively consider the potential threats to their systems from such terrorist activity, as well as from a host of other, often more common, crisis events, such as natural disasters, aging infrastructure or vandalism. The Checklist itself is based on five key utility assets - physical plant, people, knowledge base, information technology and customers. Each vital asset category provides an overview of various risks to wastewater utilities, allowing the utility to consider and assess potential points of vulnerability.

Additional copies of the Checklist are available for purchase at $10 per copy or can be downloaded free of charge by visiting AMSA's online bookstore, http://www.amsa-cleanwater.org/pubs/publist.cfm. We hope you find the Checklist useful for your agency. Special thanks are due to AMSA's Wastewater Infrastructure Security Task Force for its significant contribution to this publication.
