Join your clean water colleagues July 18 - 21, 2006 for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies’ (NACWA) 2006 Summer Conference and 36th Annual Meeting – Cross-Cutting Clean Water & Drinking Water Issues…Challenging Traditional Boundaries. Through an agenda prepared in cooperation with the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) and the Water Environment Federation (WEF), NACWA’s 2006 Summer Conference will examine several cross-cutting issues. New, more stringent requirements for pathogens and disinfection byproducts, emerging contaminants, and communities’ increasing demand for water – that are contributing to mounting tension between water and wastewater agencies, will all be featured.
The conference will focus on challenging the traditional boundaries between Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act issues – and the sometimes conflicting goals of these two major water laws. Sessions are being developed with the goal of helping agencies chart a path toward working together to meet the ever increasing demand for clean water.
Presentations to Highlight Potential Conflicts
and Solutions
Panel presentations and roundtable discussions will examine areas of
potential conflict, highlight how clean water and drinking water agencies are
working together, and identify areas for future collaboration. Specific topics
will include:

Emerging Pollutants - How will contaminants like pharmaceuticals and personal care products further exacerbate existing tensions between clean water and drinking water interests?

Legal Framework: CWA/SDWA Interaction - Are the two major statutes covering the water sector at odds with each other? Will additional legislation or guidance be necessary in the future as conflicts between water and wastewater interests increase?

Source Water Protection - How do source water protection efforts integrate with the concept of watershed management? Will source water protection assessments only lead to more challenges?

Water Quantity vs. Water Quality - What happens when demand for reuse-quality wastewater starts to have a negative impact on ecological systems?

Future Water Quantity Impacts - Will more clean water agencies be pursuing water reuse efforts in the near future? What role will the clean water and water reuse communities have on future water demands?

Disinfection Byproducts - What impacts will new regulations on disinfection byproducts have on the clean water/drinking water interplay?

Pathogen Management - Pathogens continue to be a major driver for many of the challenges failed by the clean water and drinking water communities and new regulations for drinking water disinfection will likely complicate things.
Special Events During the 2006 Summer
Conference & 36th Annual Meeting
In addition to the informative technical program and the Annual
Association Business Meeting, attendees can choose to participate in two special
events held during the afternoon of Thursday, July 20th.

King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks will be offering a Facility Tour. The County provides wastewater treatment to 17 cities and 17 local sewer utilities in the central Puget Sound region and serves about 1.4 million people, including most urban areas of King County and parts of south Snohomish County and north Pierce County. The tour is complimentary and includes a box lunch.

The 2006 NACWA Open will be held at the Foster Golf Links in Tukwila, Wash. The course offers challenging play that is enjoyable for experts and novices alike.
