Butler County Bureau report HAMILTON – The Butler County Department of
Environmental Services will receive a 2004 National Achievement Award from the
Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies for an informational brochure and
CD-ROM it developed concerning the Upper Mill Creek water Reclamation facility.

Of the 300-plus members of the association, BCDES is one of 25 selected for
this year's award.

The brochure, developed by department staff, provides customers with
information about the Water Reclamation Facility and the equipment used to
treat wastewater. An accompanying CD-ROM details the technical aspects of the
facility, by giving viewers a virtual tour through the various stages of the
wastewater treatment process and provides information about future planned
expansions.

The CD-ROM also was designed to be an interactive learning tool for local
schools. BCDES is currently discussing with Lakota School District the
possibility of incorporating the CD-ROM into the lesson plan for middle-school
science teachers.

The AMSA lauded BCDES for “its innovative efforts to communicate various
operational aspects of its facilities to customers and students.”

“I am proud of this particular public information piece because it gives
the public a detailed description of what we do on a daily basis and serves as
a supplemental educational piece to science teachers,” said
Environmental Services Director Tony Parrott.

Butler County commissioners commended Parrott and his staff for the award.

“I am excited to see BCDES receive national recognition for their
efforts toward providing creative informational resources to our community,&
#x201d; commission President Charles Furmon said.

Commissioners Michael Fox and Gregory Jolivette said they liked the dual
function of the brochure and CD-ROM as informational materials useful for
customers as well as teachers and their students.

The award will be presented with the AMSA Forum and Annual meeting in May.

AMSA represents the interests of wastewater treatment agencies within the
United States.
