And the Winner Is . . .

In Newark, N.J., the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners (PVSC) has received a National Environmental Achievement Award from the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes PVSC's Pollution Prevention Educational Outreach Program, which focuses on how litter, household and industrial wastes affect the quality of local waterways. The Meadville (Pa.) Area Water Authority (MAWA) has received the Water System of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association. MAWA, whose facilities are managed by Voorhes, N.J.-based American Water, received the award in part for its response to a collapsed street after a severe rainstorm in August 2003. Full water service was restored within 40 hours.

The Bergen County (N.J.) Utilities Authority has received a 2004 Wave Award from the Mercerville, N.J.-based Association of Environmental Authorities of New Jersey. The awards honor agencies that show a commitment to protecting and enhancing public health and the environment. The utility received an award in the forward thinking category for its participation in the New Jersey Harbor Dischargers Group Long-Term Ambient Water Quality Sampling Program.
