Albany Public Works Receives Honor

Albany's Public Works Department has received a Gold Peak Performance Award.

The Peak Performance Awards program sponsored by the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies recognizes public wastewater treatment facilities for their outstanding compliance records in 2003.

Albany's award was for achieving 100 percent compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for an entire calendar year. NPDES permits regulate the quality of water discharged from a wastewater treatment plant at the end of the treatment process in accordance with the Federal Clean Water Act.

This is Albany's second award.

"The Albany Wastewater Treatment Plant is an outstanding example of environmental efforts," said Ken Kirk, AMSA's executive director.

Orientation planned for council candidates

Anyone considering running for a seat on the Albany City Council in November is invited to an orientation from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the council chambers, 333 Broadalbin St. S.W.

The city and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the session.

Registration is not necessary.

Participants will hear about council responsibilities, legal information, councilors' roles, time commitments, filing for office, and campaign laws and financing.

Presenters include council President Ralph Reid Jr., Councilor Bessie Johnson, City Manager Steve Bryant, City Attorney Jim Delapoer, City Recorder Betty Langwell and accountant Debbie Blasquez.
