Local water treatment plant awarded by EPA

News-Chronicle
The Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District is one of 10 facilities in six states to be awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. GBMSD will be awarded the EPA's First Place Award for Operations and Maintenance Excellence in its region. It is qualified to compete for a national award presented in October.

GBMSD will be named the best plant in the "large, advanced treatment" category. The plant serves 176,000 people in Green Bay and 16 nearby communities, as well as 48 large, industrial facilities.

The award will be presented to GBMSD at the treatment facility, 2231 N. Quincy St., at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Cake, ice cream and small group tours of the facility will be offered.

Brown County Executive Carol Kelso, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt, state legislators and local representatives are expected to attend, as well as Department of Natural Resources and EPA officials.

"This recognition from the Environmental Protection Agency is one of the finest compliments GBMSD could receive. Our commission and staff are extremely proud of this award, which enhances our agency's reputation as a best-in-class service provider," said Paul Thormodsgard, executive director, in a news release. "This work is vitally important to the economic development and environmental health of our community, and our staff performs it with considerable effectiveness."

In the past 10 years, GBMSD won six Gold and four Silver Awards from the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies for wastewater treatment excellence. The plant removes more than 97 percent of pollutants from 30 million gallons of wastewater each day.
