Agency Issues Guide on Potential Terrorism and Wastewater

Oct. 26 -- The National Association of Clean Water Agencies has released its first guide to explore the potential impacts future terrorist attacks could have on wastewater facilities.

Planning for Decontamination Wastewater: A Guide for Utilities outlines the steps wastewater plant managers need to take to detect and respond to decontamination wastewater following the cleanup after a chemical, biological or radiological terrorist attack.

The NACWA does not intend the guide to provide comprehensive guidance to utilities on handling decontamination wastewater. Rather, it should help utilities inform key employees of the potential impacts and outline the basic actions they should take. The guide is available at www.nacwa.org/pubs/.

The NACWA is the national trade association representing the nation’s publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities, which serve the majority of U.S. sewer customers.
