Water Quality Criteria And Standards Plan

Attached is a copy of EPA's recently released Water Quality Criteria and Standards Plan - Priorities for the Future. The Plan discusses six priority areas for the water quality criteria and standards program including: 1) ambient water quality criteria; 2) nutrient criteria; 3) microbial pathogens; 4) biocriteria; 5) TMDLs and modeling; and, 6) sedimentation, flow, and wildlife. In the plan, EPA cites excessive nutrient enrichment, microbial contamination, and wet weather flows as three major reasons why new water quality criteria and improvements to the existing water quality standards program are needed.

EPA is interested in thoughts on how to best achieve the ambitious number of activities described for each priority area. Based on feedback EPA receives, it will make changes and additions to the Plan to ensure it thoroughly reflects the priorities and needs of the nation's water quality managers and the public.

AMSA would like to provide feedback to the Agency on the Plan. AMSA members are encouraged to provide comment on the Plan no later than August 14, 1998. Please send your comments to AMSA, c/o Mark Hoeke, 1000 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 410, Washington, DC 20036, or fax at 202/833-9106, or email to mhoeke@amsa-cleanwater.org.
