In its 30-year history, AMSA has taken a leading role in ensuring that biosolids meet high levels of quality to protect public health and the environment. AMSA's participation in the development of Clean Water Act Section 503 biosolids amendments and ensuing regulations as well as its efforts as a founding member of the National Biosolids Partnership are strong examples of this longstanding commitment.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s AMSA was an influential factor in providing extensive information on the quality and management of municipal biosolids. AMSA provided unmatched expertise and experience during the peer-review process of the complex science underlying 503 regulations, ensuring protective standards and smooth implementation.

As a natural outgrowth of these early efforts in the biosolids management program, AMSA helped forge, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Water Environment Federation, the National Biosolids Partnership. The Partnership's goal is not only to help communities meet the strict quality standards for municipal biosolids, but to facilitate their efforts to go beyond these standards to further assure the public of biosolids' safety. To establish the Partnership and to ensure support for its mission, AMSA has worked intensively to secure federal funding to continue its efforts. As science and technology continues to evolve, AMSA will continue as a leader in biosolids science and management for the good of the nation's communities and the environment.
