AMSA Launches New-and-Improved Website
AMSA is pleased to announce the launch of the Association's upgraded, user-friendly website. The site was officially launched this week, and already positive feedback is streaming in. The enhanced functions of the site will ensure that members can track the progress of AMSA's priority issues more easily and efficiently. It also will be a vital tool in promoting and deploying grassroots campaigns to raise awareness of issues critical to publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). Already, AMSA has received praise on the new site's enhanced graphics that are easier on the eyes and to use. Now is also the perfect time to become an AMSA E-Member and benefit from increased efficiency in distributing the site's information via e-mail to your colleagues. Over 42% of AMSA's Main Members have already opted for E-Membership, and the numbers are rising. To view the new site and to become an E-Member today, visit http://www.amsa-cleanwater.org.
AMSA's Regional Caucuses Start with a Bang
AMSA took to the road this week, bringing the Association to POTWs in Region V, where a lively exchange of ideas about AMSA's priority initiatives and an informative dialogue about emerging local POTW concerns took place. The Region V Caucus, held June 19 in Cleveland, Ohio provided a forum for an informative discourse focusing on water infrastructure funding concerns and wet weather issues. The meeting proved popular, with 18 member and non-member POTW representatives from Ohio, Minnesota, and Illinois in attendance. This is the second of AMSA's regional caucuses this year, the first of which took place last week in Region I in Nashua, N.H., with staff of Sen. Robert Smith (R-NH) participating. Both Caucuses were enormous successes and AMSA looks forward to similar experiences as the Association convenes more Regional Caucuses with POTWs in the future.
AMSA's Efforts Lead To New Senate Mercury Bill Co-Sponsors
AMSA's efforts are contributing significantly to the growing popularity of the Mercury Reduction and Disposal Act of 2001 (S. 351) introduced by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) in February 2001. AMSA scored a major victory this week as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) co-signed the bill after receipt of a letter sent by an AMSA member agency. Also, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) co-signed the bill recently after being inspired by similar AMSA encouragement. AMSA supports the bill's goal of limiting the use of mercury fever thermometers and its establishment of an Interagency Task Force on Mercury as a key first step in formulating a national mercury reduction strategy. AMSA asks its members to continue writing letters to their Senate delegates to garner further support for the bill and ensure that the voice of the POTW community is heard. An easy to format letter on the mercury issue can be found in Legislative Alert 01-05 or on our website at http://www.amsa-cleanwater.org/private/legreg/legalrts/la-01-5.cfm.
