AMSA’s upcoming Summer Conference, Controlling Wet Weather Overflows . . . Challenges and Solutions, will be held at the Hilton Portland in Portland, Oregon, July 16 – 19, 2002. The agenda will focus on key wet weather issues such as sanitary and combined sewer overflows, total maximum daily loads and use attainability analyses, which represent significant challenges for publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) and have come under increased scrutiny and evaluation by national policy-makers.
Informative Sessions to Focus on a Range of Wet Weather
Issues
This year’s Summer Conference agenda will focus on a variety of
wet weather issues. Among the issues to be examined during the conference
include:
- Setting of regulations for wet weather overflows (combined and sanitary sewer overflows);
- Design and maintenance of collection systems;
- Strategies for public utilities handling peak flows and wet weather events;
- Operation and maintenance practices to reduce overflow events;
- Lessons learned from capacity, management operations and maintenance (CMOM) for controlling overflows; and
- Wet weather watershed management concepts.
In addition, a portion of the conference will be devoted to discussing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new watershed rule and its implications for the clean water community. A preliminary conference program is included in this Member Update.
AMSA Committees to Examine Important Clean Water Issues
AMSA’s special committees will meet during the 2002 Summer
Conference. These meetings are designed to keep attendees abreast of current and
emerging regulatory and legislative issues from sanitary sewer overflows to
infrastructure funding. These strategic discussions will be critical; committee
members and interested individuals are encouraged to attend.
