AMSA is serving on America’s Clean Water Foundation’s (ACWF) Steering Committee to help plan and implement ACWF’s 2002: The Year of Clean Water — an initiative to both celebrate thirty years of clean water gains under the Clean Water Act (CWA) and to demonstrate a renewed commitment to further clean water progress. The Year of Clean Water will feature a series of events throughout October 2002 to commemorate the October 18, 1972 enactment of the CWA. These events are designed to promote public involvement; provide education and outreach to the public, especially the nation’s youth; support technical exchange and watershed protection programs; and demonstrate the improvements in water quality over the past 30 years. AMSA is joined on the Steering Committee by over thirty other represented organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, among many others.
AMSA Seeks Member Participation in “The
Year of Clean Water” Initiative
AMSA believes that the Association’s public agency members can
play a vital role in the ACWF’s 2002: The Year of Clean Water. AMSA
public agency members can help educate the public regarding the important work
wastewater treatment utilities have done, and continue to do, to ensure clean
water in America, while also demonstrating the commitment to overcome the many
challenges that currently confront continued clean water progress, including
infrastructure and wet weather concerns, as well as security challenges. AMSA’s
members can become “official” sponsors of The Year of Clean Water effort;
declare 2002 to be the Year of Clean Water on your agency web sites or in
agency newsletters; and/or urge your municipal leaders or Mayors to declare 2002
the Year of Clean Water. Please be aware that a number of organizations
are organizing events for the 30th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act and may
contact your agency; AMSA is, however, supporting the ACWF effort and asks that
you join with AMSA in this initiative.
Additionally, AMSA members may be interested in developing their own educational and outreach programs in October, including providing plant tours to residents and student groups, or sponsoring youth water monitoring events. ACWF has declared October 18, 2002 “National Water Monitoring Day” and citizens, volunteer monitoring organizations, students and professional water monitoring agencies will perform tests across the nation — an event your agency can participate in too. If your agency is interested in participating in The Year of Clean Water, more information is available at www.yearofcleanwater.org or by contacting AMSA’s Adam Krantz at 202/833-2672, or via e-mail at akrantz@amsa-cleanwater.org.
