Join your clean water colleagues January 31 – February 3, 2006 for the National Association of Clean Water Agencies’ (NACWA) 2006 Winter Conference – Improving Knowledge Management in Today’s Utility. The value of knowledge management in today’s public utility is directly related to the effectiveness with which that knowledge enables the utility workforce to address the challenges of today, and create a vision for the future. NACWA’s 2006 Winter Conference will examine the optimal ways for today’s clean water utilities to create, capture, share and leverage the knowledge they need to excel.
Lynn Lancaster & David Stillman — Back By Popular Demand!
Lynn Lancaster and David Stillman will be on-hand to provide the 2006
Winter Conference Keynote Address, Finders Keepers: How the Rules of the
Knowledge Game Have Changed, on Wednesday, February 1. Based upon the
premise that the key to knowledge management is not how much you know, but how
much you share, their energetic presentation will enlighten and entertain as
they explore how critical knowledge is shared across generational gaps.
Presentations to Provide Insight on Knowledge Management
The conference agenda will also feature other addresses and panels
that will fully examine knowledge from a number of critical perspectives.
Presentations will include:
- The Changing Workforce… Seizing the Opportunity — featuring the release of the latest management resource developed by NACWA and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA).
- The Changing Tides of the Nation’s Population & Demographics — will examine national trends, population forecasts and discuss how to create and maintain a sustainable utility.
- Harnessing the Knowledge You Need to Succeed — will explore the decision-making processes within utilities and the important role of knowledge management.
- Addressing a Utility’s Need for Knowledge Management — will showcase strategies utilities can employ to retain and transfer critical institutional knowledge.
- Creating Effective, Efficient Operations Through Knowledge Management — will provide successful examples of utility-wide knowledge management efforts.
- Data Rich, Information Poor — No More — will provide short vignettes featuring topic-specific utility examples of knowledge management successes.
- Beyond Knowledge Management… The Keys to Service Continuity — will provide an overview of important ‘keys’ to ensure the continuity of service required of clean water utilities including asset management and mutual aid agreements.
- Wastewater Systems After the Hurricanes — Assessing the Damage, Planning for Recovery – will focus on a collaborative project to develop and present an area-wide damage assessment and associated rehabilitation and replacement costs.

NACWA/WERF Research Priorities Workshop to Precede Winter
Conference
Interested NACWA members and representatives from the Water
Environment Research Foundation’s (WERF) Research Council will meet in a
half-day session to discuss WERF's new program-directed research process and
help refine the list of research challenges that will guide the Foundation's
efforts over the next few years. NACWA and WERF will also provide an update on
the continuing efforts to increase coordination to better leverage the resources
of each organization. This meeting will provide NACWA members with a unique
opportunity to influence the direction of WERF's research agenda for the coming
years and learn how to keep their agency engaged in ongoing research efforts.
All NACWA members are invited to attend — free of charge — whether or not you plan to attend the Association’s 2006 Winter Conference. Pre-registration is required. Please indicate whether you plan to attend on your registration form. We look forward to seeing you in February.
