ALEXANDRIA, VA, April 23, 2004 -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF) congratulates the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Bureaus of Engineering Sanitation, and Contract Administration in Playa Del Ray, California for being named the "First Major Biosolids Facility in the USA to Achieve Pathogen-Free Standards".

The prestigious award was presented to the agency by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) during their annual Excellence in Environmental Engineering Awards celebrated on Earth Day, April 22, 2004.

"WEF is pleased with the L. A. Department of Public Works' achievement," said WEF Executive Director Bill Bertera. "This award signifies that the agency supports excellence in biosolids management and is committed to enhancing environmental excellence in local communities. "

The purpose of the Academy's Excellence in Environmental Engineering competition is to recognize and promote quality environmental engineering. Each entry is evaluated by an independent panel of judges based on criteria that define what it takes to achieve excellence: a holistic environmental perspective; innovation; performance and client satisfaction; and contribution to an improved quality of life and economic efficiency.

In addition to receiving this honor from AAEE, the L. A. Department of Public Works successfully achieved independent, third-party verification of the National Biosolids Partnership's (an alliance of the WEF, Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies, and U. S. Environmental Protection Agency) environmental management system (EMS) for biosolids program in September 2003.
