City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation receives environmental engineering award on Earth Day 2004

ALEXANDRIA, VA, April 23, 2004 -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF) congratulates the City of Los Angeles, Department of Public Works, Bureaus of Engineering Sanitation, and Contract Administration in Playa Del Ray, California for being named the "First Major Biosolids Facility in the USA to Achieve Pathogen-Free Standards".
The prestigious award was presented to the agency by the American Academy of
Environmental Engineers (AAEE) during their annual Excellence in Environmental
Engineering Awards celebrated on Earth Day, April 22, 2004.
"WEF is pleased with the L. A. Department of Public Works' achievement," said
WEF Executive Director Bill Bertera. "This award signifies that the agency
supports excellence in biosolids management and is committed to enhancing
environmental excellence in local communities. "
The purpose of the Academy's Excellence in Environmental Engineering competition
is to recognize and promote quality environmental engineering. Each entry is
evaluated by an independent panel of judges based on criteria that define what
it takes to achieve excellence: a holistic environmental perspective;
innovation; performance and client satisfaction; and contribution to an improved
quality of life and economic efficiency.
In addition to receiving this honor from AAEE, the L. A. Department of Public
Works successfully achieved independent, third-party verification of the
National Biosolids Partnership's (an alliance of the WEF, Association of
Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies, and U. S. Environmental Protection Agency)
environmental management system (EMS) for biosolids program in September 2003.
