Ashland Wastewater Treatment Plant Receives
Top Award
Thursday July 8, 2004
Hanover County’s wastewater treatment plant in Ashland has received the
prestigious Platinum Award from the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage
Agencies (AMSA). Hanover County was one of only 19 local governments nationwide
that had facilities earning the Platinum Award.
The AMSA Platinum Award is given only to those facilities that achieve 100
percent compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
permits for five consecutive years. NPDES permits establish strict limits
controlling pollutants being discharged into waterways such as streams, rivers
and lakes.
"Protection of the environment continues to be a top priority for Hanover
County," said Frank W. Harksen, Jr., Hanover’s director of Public Utilities. "We
are proud to have our accomplishments recognized nationally and of our team for
making such accomplishments possible."
The operations staff of the Ashland Wastewater Treatment Plant includes Kim
Spruth, Superintendent; Tim Locklerr, Journeyman Operator; Robbie Pollay,
Journeyman Operator; and Dayna L. Sonovick, Apprentice Operator. The Board of
Supervisors recognized their work with a proclamation presented last week.
AMSA is a nationwide organization whose members collectively treat and reclaim
more than 18 billion gallons of wastewater daily. AMSA represents the interests
of the nation’s wastewater treatment agencies, maintains a key role in the
development of environmental legislation and works closely with federal
regulatory agencies to implement environmental programs.
AMSA established the annual awards program to recognize wastewater systems for
exceptional performance as related to permit compliance. Facilities can also
receive Silver and Gold awards.
