Moore to Present Environmental Award
Wednesday, November 30, 2005

Congressman Dennis Moore, D-Kan., and representatives from four federal agencies will be in Lawrence this afternoon to present a national environmental award to the city’s wastewater operators.

Lawrence’s sewer system will be recognized as just the 10th in the country to be certified under the National Biosolids Partnership’s Environmental Management System.

Moore — along with leaders from the National Biosolids Partnership, the Water Environment Federation, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies and the Environmental Protection Agency — will present Lawrence leaders with the honor at a 1:30 p.m. ceremony at the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, 1400 E. Eighth St.

City staff members also will be providing tours and answering questions about the sewer plant from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to the certification — which required a third-party audit of the city’s wastewater system — today’s event also will recognize EPA awards the city has received from the EPA for operations and maintenance and biosolids management.
