Sewers: For Bart: 'A' for Effort
Our sewers dump so much untreated waste into area waterways the
mayor got an award -- for trying to clean things up.The National Association of
Clean Water agencies honored Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson for his efforts to
reduce the amount of raw sewage that ends up in creeks and rivers when rains hit
the area. He was lauded for actions such as:
• Developing a long-term plan to reduce sewage overflows.
• Creating a new septic tank elimination program to help fund city sewers for
some 900 homes each year.
• Launching the first real-time public sewer overflow alert in the nation.
