EPA Memorandum on Sodium Demethyldithiocarbamate

Reference:

RA 00-13

Attached is a recent memorandum from EPA Headquarters alerting regional water quality directors to the potential problems that could arise from the misuse of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate and associated compounds. These compounds are used to aid the precipitation of metals in industrial wastewater treatment and pretreatment systems.

The alert was issued due to recent events in Anderson, Indiana, where it is alleged that a metal plating facility discharged large volumes of these chemicals during closure operations at the end of 1999. The facility did not notify the city pretreatment officials of its operational changes and caused inhibition at the Anderson POTW which resulted in a major fish kill along a 50 mile stretch of the White River. For more information on the case refer to the attached memorandum and http://www.starnews.com/special/whiteriver/index.cfml, or contact Mark Hoeke, AMSA 202/833-9106.
