What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You –
Negotiating and Implementing
Whole Effluent Toxicity Requirements
November 6-8, 2002
Westin Tabor Center
Denver, Colorado
PLAN NOW TO ATTEND — HOTEL DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 7, 2002
Join AMSA in Denver, Colo., November 6-8 as we explore strategies to better implement whole effluent toxicity (WET) requirements and avoid unrealistic WET permit limits. This fall will be a critical time in the whole effluent toxicity arena, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to repromulgate its WET test methods by the end of the year. Although litigation has kept WET out of the spotlight for a number of years, EPA’s actions this fall are likely to result in a flurry of activity from permit writers and enforcement personnel. If WET is not an issue for your agency now, it will be soon.
Informative Sessions to Focus on Key WET Issues
The workshop, consisting of four half-day sessions, will highlight the critical
issues that both WET testing staff and personnel responsible for negotiating,
certifying, and monitoring compliance with WET permit requirements must
understand. This workshop will not teach how to conduct WET tests.
Rather, it will provide advice and counsel to help you ensure your agency’s permit limits are realistic. The workshop will offer in-depth technical presentations and valuable opportunities for wastewater professionals to get feedback from WET experts on their agency’s issues. The workshop will provide participants with helpful tips and vital information that they cannot get anywhere else. A joint session with AMSA's Law Seminar will examine the sometimes complex interactions between technical and legal policy issues, and highlight WET issues that are critical for both groups to understand.
Designed by wastewater professionals to address the issues most relevant to the clean water community, the workshop will present the no nonsense facts about managing WET requirements. Are you struggling to explain WET issues to your state permit writer? We encourage you to invite them to join you at the workshop to learn from the experts.
Participants will learn:
- Five things every discharger should know before they negotiate WET monitoring requirements or effluent limits in their next National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit;
- How to cut the cost of a Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) in half;
- Three most common reasons WET tests fail when the effluent is not really toxic (and what to do about it in the next test);
- Key language every discharger should add to the certification statement when reporting WET test results on the Discharge Monitoring Report (DMR);
- Ten questions you must ask any bioassay lab before they test your effluent for toxicity;
- Six ways to tell the difference between a true toxic event and a “false positive”;
- And much more!
